Half chaps can be easily worn over breeches or jeans, taking just seconds to slide on and zipper up. They fit over the paddock boot and typically feature an elastic strap worn under the heel on the outside of the paddock or jodhpur boot, a zipper running the length of the back of the calf and a fastener behind the knee. Designed to mirror the look and support of a tall boots, half chaps contour tightly to the shaft of the calf, protecting the rider’s lower leg from rubbing painfully against the stirrup leathers. Elastic panels fitted along both sides of the zipper and covering the front of the ankle help to ensure a snug fit and prevent the half chaps from moving out of position. Because the boot and half chap are separate pieces of leather anchored together by an elastic heel strap, half chaps feature a very flexible ankle allowing riders to sink deep into their heels. This makes half chaps ideal for schooling over fences. While half chaps require significantly less time and pain to break in than the traditional tall boot, leather half chaps will still conform to the shape of your leg over the course of several rides, giving them a custom look and feel.

Half chap styles range from sporty, to elegant, to professional. The Spanish top style popular in tall boots, in which the outside of the boot is cut high than the inside of the boot, is also available in half chaps. While half chaps are traditionally plain, practical footwear, modern options feature punched hole details, metal logos, and crystal accents. They are available in black and brown colors, and are traditionally matched to ones paddock boots. Like paddock boots, half chaps are commonly constructed from leather, which can be either smooth or suede in appearance. Depending on personal preference, half chaps can be constructed entirely out of smooth leather for a sleek, elegant look, or suede leather, for a sporty look and more secure grip.
