Halters or Leads

Halters and leads are essential for daily care of horses allowing for easy handling, leading and ground work. Horze Equestrian offers halters and leads by their own design as well as by B Vertigo and Finntack. Halters are available in designs suitable for daily wear, turnout and shows. Horse halters are sized by the type and age of the horse or pony including sizes like foal, Shetland pony, pony, cob, horse or warmblood.

Halter Types

Leather halters are a traditional design that is practical for daily use and is a favorite choice for shows for shows as well. Horze Equestrian offers leather halter designs from workmanlike to fancy. Leather halters are very durable and it is often recommend that leather halters should be available as part of a fire safety plan because they will not melt in the event of high heat. Design features to look for in a leather halter are reinforced stitching, padding, adjustable chins straps, buckles at the throatlatch and accent features like raising, fancy stitching or crystal accents. Leather halters are typically available in black or brown.

Another common type of halter is the nylon halter; this style of halter is designed for daily use and is available in styles by Horze Equestrian, Finntack or B Vertigo. Although called nylon halters, they may also be made of polyester or polypropylene. These halters are available in a wide variety of different colors and designs. Features to look for in nylon halters include adjustable chins and crowns, throatlatch straps, breakaway tabs or crowns, comfort padding and decorative accents like overlays, embroidery or crystals. Other types of halters include rope halters and headcollars. Rope halters feature a single rope that is tied to fit; these halters are often used for ground work or are used in lieu of a chain lead for high strung horses. Headcollars consist of a single strap and are often used for long transport or in the field for horses that tend to remove traditionally styled halters.

Lead Rope or Lead Line?

Lead ropes and lead lines are used for leading and tying horses. Broken into these two main types, ropes are a rounded lead and typically made of cotton, nylon or polyester. Lead lines are generally flat and are often made of leather, though they may also be made of other materials. Either lead ropes or lines can have a snap or chain shank end, although the snap end is more common on lead ropes and a chain shank is more common with lead lines. Chain lead shanks are used to reinforce the handler’s aids on the ground and are commonly used with strong horses; a chain lead should never be used to tie a horse. Care should also be taken to not use a chain improperly Lead ropes are more commonly used for daily care as the round shape is comfortable in the hand and is easier to tie securely. Lead lines are more commonly used for showing in hand when a bridle is not used. Show leads are typically made of leather. Horze Equestrian creates durable leads for daily and show use.
