Rider Spotlight: Q&A with Michel Feitosa
Equinavia sponsored rider Michel Feitosa has a story that spans continents, hard work, and a lifelong passion for horses. From humble beginnings in Brazil to competing on international circuits, Michel has earned his place in the equestrian world through grit, determination, and dedication to the sport. We caught up with him to learn more about his journey, his inspirations, and the small traditions that keep him focused in the ring.
Q: How did you get started in the equestrian world?
Michel: I’ve always loved horses. When I was a kid, my grandma was living on a farm with a lot of animals in the north of Brazil, far from where I was from. We went to visit her and one day, I saw a pony near the fence, and I thought if I could get it closer I could get on. I grabbed a mango to bribe the pony, and it worked! My mom got very nervous when she realized I had hopped on so I had to get off. Some years after that, she helped find a place I could take lessons, but my family could not afford to support my passion financially, so I worked in the barn to earn opportunities, and it continued from there.
Q: Do you have any pre-ride or pre-show rituals? Any good luck charms?
Michel: The legendary Nelson Pessoa always emphasized to me the importance of a polished, professional presentation, so I always shave my beard and clean my boots very well before a big class. I also have a bracelet my wife gave me that I wear when I feel like I really need a result.
Q: Who is someone you look up to in the equestrian world and why?
Michel: Rodrigo Pessoa has always been an important influence for me. Growing up in Brazil, obviously what he has been able to accomplish is incredible. When I left Brazil myself to join his team and work with him, it was like chasing a dream. Now to know him on a more personal level, his continued enthusiasm for the sport is something I really value as well.
Q: What’s your favorite Equinavia product and how does it support your ride?
Michel:I love the breeches! They’re comfortable, the fit is great, and they look nice in every color. Since I spend all day in the saddle, it’s important to have something that feels good to wear, is durable, and presents well in the ring.
Q: What’s one surprising fact about you outside the barn?
Michel: I have a black cat named Blackberry. He showed up at the farm we were staying at five years ago, and my wife decided we should keep him—so now we have a cat!
Follow along with Michel and our other sponsored riders as they continue to inspire, compete, and pursue their dreams—always in the saddle and always with style.
